Birdev Siddhappa Dhone was born in Yamge village of Kagal taluka, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, in a shepherd family of Dhangar community. The main source of income of his family was sheep and goat rearing. There was one acre of land in the house, and the whole family lived in a small hut-like house, where there were fences on all sides for the sheep. Birdev’s elder brother is not in the Indian Army, and he gave financial support for Birdev’s education.

Birdev’s childhood was full of hardships. Sometimes he used to ride sheep in the hills, and sometimes he used to study sitting in the verandah of the school. But he never gave up his dream – the dream of becoming an officer. His sister Swati, who is now a Deputy Collector, also inspired him.
Education: From Zilla Parishad School to College of Engineering
Birdev Siddhappa Dhone started his studies in the Zilla Parishad school of the village, where he studied till 10th standard and secured first rank in Murgud Centre with 96% marks. After that, he completed 11th and 12th from Jai Maharashtra High School, and topped 12th from Shivraj Vidyalaya Junior College, Murgud with 89% marks.
After this, Birdev took a degree in Civil Engineering from College of Engineering, Pune (2020). After engineering, he also worked as a postman in India Post for some time, but his heart was in UPSC. He left his job and put full focus on UPSC preparation.

UPSC Practice: No Coaching, Only Self-Study
Birdev Siddhappa Dhone UPSC journey is most inspiring because he did all this without coaching from any big city. He neither had expensive study material nor any fancy guidance. He relied on self-study. He prepared for UPSC while living in Delhi, where financial challenges and daily expenses came in his way. But his brother Vasudev supported him at every step.
He failed in the first two attempts, but Birdev did not give up. In the third attempt, in 2024, he cleared the UPSC Civil Services Exam and secured AIR 551. When the result came, he was grazing sheep with his family in a field in Belgaum. A friend called him, “Birdev, you have become an IPS!” On hearing this, tears of joy came to his eyes.
